Ever wonder how to take a professional photo as a real estate agent that stands out from the crowd? Well, I’m so excited to show you how! First, I’ll walk you through what you need to do prepare for your real estate photo. Then we’ll talk about how to take a good photo. Let’s get started.
How to prepare for a real estate agent photo or headshot
I scheduled a professional photography session for my real estate website (yes, this one) and I realized I wanted to show my personality, so I could start to build trust and confidence with my reader. I want whoever looks at this site to get a comfort level that they know who I am, and they understand a bit of my personality. After all, people work with who they know, like and trust.
And I recommend the same for you. Be intentional about the below:
- Understand who you want to attract – in other words, who’s your ideal client? [click_to_tweet tweet=”Your picture should attract your ideal client and make them feel a connection towards you as a professional. ” quote=”Your picture should attract your ideal client and make them feel a connection towards you as a professional. “]What you wear and how you pose will look different based on your ideal client.
- Clarify the image you want to portray – who are you? When a potential client goes to your website or finds your business card, what do you want them to think? This is a good time for you to brainstorm words that describe you as a business owner and professional.
- Choose the proper setting – where will you take your pictures? This is the one of the topics I’m passionate about. I don’t know why agents still do it, but I’m sure if you’ve looked around, you’ve seen the same old boring real estate agent pics. You know the headshot. Head tilted to the side. Gray background. Stiff business suite. The agent is either really happy or quite hard-nosed. But either way it’s so old school. And it needs to change. This will not be you.

How do you take a professional real estate headshot that’s casual and up to date?
I’m going to get really transparent here, I decided to pull out some clothes and do some posing before my first photo shoot and I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. I know I’m not the only one that feels that way sometimes. In fact, I was so overwhelmed, that I cancelled my first shoot. I rescheduled it for a month later, so I could get myself together. And then I had to have a come to Jesus moment with myself. You know, the type of conversation where you have to just be brutally honest with yourself. I had a change a few things about how I was presenting myself. Here’s what I recommend:
- Outfit – pic out a few outfits that are either your signature colors (part of your business brand colors) or ones that make you fell like a million bucks. Then try them on, stand in front of the mirror and pose. This is basically your dress rehearsal. Think of how you plan to wear your hair and what makeup you’ll use. Also look at the fit of the clothes. Ask yourself if this is indeed the right outfit? Do you need to get it tailored? Do you need to purchase another outfit?
- Face – make sure those teeth are looking their whitest! You’ll want to consider getting your teeth professionally whitened or doing what I did which is using Crest White Strips. They’re a grip at $50 a box, but they’re a lot less expensive than getting your teeth professionally whitened.
- Hair – include styling of your hair during your dress rehearsal. This is a great time to see if the hairstyle you imaged actually looks good with the outfit you picked out. It’s also a time to get real with yourself again. Do you need to get a haircut, color or trim? Do you need to go to your hairstylist before your photo shoot to see if another style would suit you better at this stage in your life?
- Prep – good self-care leading up to the photo shoot so that you look AND feel 100% your best. If you’re not feeling your best, it’ll show on pictures. And you want to your pictures to portray you as the confident, professional and knowledgeable agent you are.
- Overall styling – so once you’re at the setting to get your photos done, if you haven’t already done so, take the time to talk about your business with your photographer. Let me know who your ideal client is and walk them through your business specialties. Would an indoor shot be good or would an exterior photo of you in front of a house be better? Think about what your specialty is and then how you can best show that visually.
