Success Tips for Real Estate Agents

Accountability – being in business for yourself sounds like a like of fun, but its tough.  I mean, it seems fun knowing that you don’t have to answer to anyone.  Right?  But how good are you with choosing a task and following through to the end?  You’ll need to set clear goals and have standards and expectations for your business.  To help you be more accountable to yourself, I recommend creating a schedule based off your yearly goals.

Motivation and Enthusiasm – you need to keep yourself in the right frame of mind. As an agent, you can feel like you’re getting beat up when things don’t go right. For me, one of the things I do to get back into a good mental space, listen to upbeat music.  I also know that exercise and eating right give me energy.  Do you read inspirational blogs or follow agents that inspire you?  Be careful, if you’re starting to feel like Jealous Jane, then stop following for a while.  But as long as you gain motivation, keep following.  Listen to the podcasts, read the books and keep doing things that help motivate you.

Consistency – consistency is key!  After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your real estate empire.  Doing the right thing one or two times won’t push the needle far enough.  However, the more you take small steps into the direction you want to go, over time you’ll reach your goal.  Ultimately, once you set your goals, then you have to decide the tasks you need to take to get there. And then you need to do those tasks as often as needed – whether your tasks are daily, weekly or monthly.  For example, you need to be consistent in your prospecting, marketing and client experience.  You need to be consistent in your motivation and enthusiasm.   You also need to be consistent in how you take care of yourself, so you don’t end up burned out. Consistently make the right choices that lead to you reaching your goals.

Discipline – to me, becoming more disciplined seems like one of the more difficult things to do.  Because it’s easy to jump right in and do the tasks you enjoy doing. It’s another thing to do the tasks that you don’t enjoy, but still need to do.  And then do them consistently.  Have you ever heard of the phrase “successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do”?  Because being disciplined is really about having control over yourself.  A tip that’s helped me be more disciplined is to listen to my natural body rhythm. I plan tasks for the best time of day for me.  For example, mid-day is the best time for me to write posts like this.  I’m not a morning person, so I’m more disciplined when I listen to my natural flow.

Positivity – you need to speak life into yourself and into your business. Because if you don’t believe that you can be successful, who will?  If you don’t believe you can be successful, it’ll also show.  Daily affirmations are one way to speak positivity into your life and business.  But how about speaking some good old fashion kind words to yourself.  Re-phrase your self-talk. Instead of saying “you blew that deal” say “I did my best and now I’m going to learn X so I’m even better next time”. This also means that you need to watch who you hang around. You’ll always be able to find someone that’s all gloom and doom.  Stay away from those people!  Find someone that believes you CAN be a successful agent because they’re doing it themselves.  There’s a different between knowing that if you improve your service, skill and mindset that your business will improve, and thinking that there’s no hope in sight.  Your belief and mindset dictate your actions and your actions, over time, determine what you get out of life.

Focus – stop chasing the squirrels!  Sure, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, but you have to pick one way and stick to it.  How many ways are there to generate leads?  You can go after FSBO, Expireds, Open House, Door Knock, Social Media, Referrals, SOIs and on and on.  But you can’t expect to see much progress if you keep switching your methods.  You should choose one that you think will work with your personality, your ideal client and your market, and stick with that long enough to see if you’re seeing results.
