how to write an agent bio that will attract your ideal client

Writing an attention-grabbing agent bio that will attract your ideal client

As a real estate agent, your bio is your chance to share who you are and connect with the reader. Chances are, you won’t be in the room when a potential client first hears about you.  Your bio is your chance to put your best foot forward and share the things you think make you special.  A strong bio highlights your abilities and gives potential clients confidence that you can help them with their real estate needs.  Stick around and I’ll walk you through the process of creating an attention-grabbing agent biography that will attract your ideal client.  You learn the 8 things that should be included in your bio.  Then I’ll talk share how new agents can adjust their bio to best highlight their attributes.  Then I’ll also tell you how to download the template and example for writing a compelling agent bio.

8 important things to include in your real estate agent bio

So, whether it’s an extended bio or a short snippet, there are 8 things you should always include in your agent bio. Check out below:

1) Years active – this is a pretty obvious one, how long have you been in real estate? You can also state the length of time you’ve worked in a specific farm area, or how long you’ve specialized in a specific client type (like first time home buyers)

2) Experience – I honestly don’t think that people are so concerned with how long you’ve been in business, but that you can get the job done. In other words, WIIFM (what’s in it for me)?  Based on your previous experiences, are you specially trained to handle short sales?  How about helping empty nesters downsize?  Your goal is to connect your past experience with what your potential clients need.  This is your unique selling proposition, or USP.

3) Awards/achievement/community connection – everyone loves to receive an award. This is confirmation from your peers that you’ve done well.  Where do you volunteer?  Are you a leader in your community?

4) Certifications/education and training – taking a course or receiving certification in a specific area of real estate. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) has several main designations and even more courses that you can take online or in person.  This education helps build your knowledge within the specialty you choose.

5) Skills – what problem to do you try to help your clients solve? What skills are valuable to your ideal client? This is also a good section to talk about who’s on your team.  Do you have a team of professionals that help you with a certain aspect of the business – like a reputable photographer or stager?  Even stating that you have a list of trusted vendors can give your prospective clients confidence that you can help them every step of the way.

6) Honesty – this should be obvious, right? But let me be clear, don’t embellish on your accomplishments.  State the facts of who you are and what you represent.  Integrity goes a long way in this business.  Your reputation can either pave the way for you or cause road blocks.  A good way to demonstrate your integrity in your bio is to share your connection to your local area.

7) Professionally branded photo – do not post a photo that wasn’t specifically taken for real estate. I also recommend staying away from taking a photo that looks like all the other traditional agent photos. Schedule a session with a professional photographer that takes lifestyle pictures. You want a picture that shows your personality and makes a connection.  Your potential clients will look at your picture and determine if they think you’re competent and if they trust you.  See if they think your photo matches what you just said in your bio.  Think of your photo as a visual introduction to your client experience.  Your photography should match your email, websites and business cards.  Your brand needs to be specific.  Put thought and effort into your photograph – consider your brand colors, brand values, missions, goals, ideal client and ensure your photographer understand the message you’re trying to convey.

8) Authentic personality – this may be last but it’s not least. Authenticity is woven throughout your entire bio.  Your authentic personality should come through in everything you do.  When you allow your true personality to show through, it allows others to connect with you.  This is the unique selling proposition in the sense that no one else can be YOU except for YOU.  Share a bit about your personal life and include your hobbies and other activities so your clients can feel a connection with you.

Real estate agent bio for new agents

Let’s the honest, new agents always feel it’s much easier to write a bio once they have some experience under their belt. Here’s are some tips on how to adjust your bio for brand new agents.

  • Years active – okay new agents, there are a couple of ways you can play this. If you have any new agent awards, you could highlight them here.  If you don’t, you could mention how your old career pointed you to this field (as long as there’s a strong parallel that helps you sell houses, remember WIIFM).  Or you can mention how you have a strong understanding of what buyers and sellers feel because you were not so long ago on the other side of the fence.
  • Experience – Think of other ways that you can assure your potential clients that you are fully capable of meeting their needs. This is a great area, where, with tact and empathy, you can talk about your ideal client’s pain points and how you can help them along the way
  • Awards/achievement – Inexperienced agents can focus on receiving referrals in this portion of the bio.  Are you involved in, or do you follow the local zoning information?  This can be invaluable to someone that is concerned with their local community.  For inexperienced agents, this is a good are where you can show that you understand the client’s needs and demonstrate how you’re able to meet them.
  • Certification, education and training – one of the best things you can do is deliver exceptional service to the clients that you DO have. Ask for recommendations and include small samples of those in your bio.

Write two different bios – one will be the shorter bio and the other will be your longer bio.  I recommend you write your shorter bio 1st person.  Writing “I love real estate” as opposed to “Tamara loves real estate” will help the audience connect to you on a more personal level.  You wouldn’t want your 1st person biography to list all of your accomplishments as if you’re bragging.  In addition to your biography, you should have an elevator pitch prepared.  This is what you say to people when they want to know more about what you do.

On the other hand, the longer bio details your experience and awards would be in 3rd person.
