Cozy Christmas Family Room
Ready to start decorating for Christmas but don’t know where to start? Let me share a few of the items to get you started.
- monogrammed stockings – you can either do this yourself with glittered colored glue, and make it a family activity or purchase monogrammed stockings from Pottery Barn.
- throw pillows – you can get throw pillows that are large, textured and cozy like these red throw pillows or winter white pillows. If you prefer, keep more traditional looking throw pillows to create a festive décor.
- stocking holders – I’ve purchased mine from my local Target in the past, but I needed extra this year. I found these cute reindeer holders on Amazon.
- wreath – nice and realistic is the way I like ‘em! You can purchase indoor wreaths to place on doors, cabinets or above a fireplace mantel. Don’t just limit yourself to the outdoors.
- Garland – you can have a lot of fun with garland. I’ve seen garland placed above fireplace mantels, on banisters heading upstairs and around door and window frames
- real mistletoe – My daughter likes to print paper mistletoe from the computer and hang it over doorways, but I think it’s time we graduate to the real deal. You can have real mistletoe shipped directly to your door.
- Christmas Tree – I think there’s two types of people. Real-tree people and artificial tree I don’t think they ever really switch sides.
- Christmas tree ornaments – for the last few years I’ve been on a red ornament kick, but I traditionally like to switch back and forth between red, blue and purple for my color each year.
- Decorative Candles – these can be placed around your mantel or, if they’re large enough on the floor. You can also put decorative candles on your end table
- Hidden scented tree candles – if you have an artificial tree and want to still have the smell of a real tree, these will be your best friend. With the color being dark green, you’d be hard pressed to tell that they’re even there. I add more once a week to continue to keep the scent going throughout the season
- Throw blankets – who doesn’t dream of snuggling under a nice cozy blanket while watching the TV or enjoying the fire? These throws are so nice that they can stand on their own as a festive decorative item when not in use
- Christmas card holder – a nice way to display all the holiday cards you’ll receive. This gives you a nice organized way to keep them in one place as a reminder of the love of your family and friends
- Advent calendar – it’s time to countdown for Christmas!
- Nativity scene – these can come as small or as large as you want them
- Piontsettias – the traditional red pointsettiaas can be found at almost any major retailer or grocery store during the holidays.
- Coffee table vignette – decorating your coffee table to get you and your family in the holiday mood
- Nutcracker – when I was a child, my grandmother always had a variety of nuts sitting in a glass container on coffee table. The nutcracker can either be fully functional and used to crack to nuts or decorative, drawing back memories of old
- Holiday scented jar – these are the alternative to candles as they release their scent effortlessly. If you get the right one, they’ll last several holiday seasons, you just need to cover the jar while it’s in storage once the holidays are over
- Holiday flowers – these can be other red, white, green or blue flowers placed around the house to add extra joy and holiday spirit
- Holiday pictures or other DIY-like items – placing the words “Joy” on your wall can be a simple reminder of what the holiday spirit should really be about.
